Faculty / Directorate

The Estates & Facilities Directorate is large and diverse, employing about 300 people, ranging from plumbers, electricians, carpenters, cleaners, porters and leisure centre assistants, to property management professionals, architects, project officers, CAD, space management, sustainability and energy and administrative personnel and of course, Security.

Role

The security industry is undergoing a change and here at DMU we focus on ensuring that service excellence is as the heart of all we do. The Security Team provides a comprehensive service to students, staff, visitors and the wider community, enhancing the customer experience and providing a welcoming safe and secure learning and working environment which, goes beyond the traditional security boundaries.

As a Security Officer you, will be responsible for the delivery of a customer driven security service, with a focus on the student experience, enabling them to reach their full potential while enjoying the university experience.

You will have an appreciation of security and safety requirements. The role requires that you are inquisitive, numerate and literate whilst, being able to work alone with minimum supervision, you must also be a good team member. A good level of fitness will also be required as you will be patrolling the campus on foot, both, at street level and in buildings, on multiple floors.

You will join a shift of Security Officers working under the supervision of a Team Leader. You will work a 5-week rotating shift pattern, that provides cover 24 hours a day, including nights, weekends and bank holidays. Most shifts last for 8 hours but some shifts are for 12 hours. Security Officers work a 37-hour week and are compensated for evening, night and weekend work by a 20% shift allowance paid in addition to their basic salary. Rotating shifts will be worked throughout the year.

The role will demand a degree of flexibility in order to support the main activities of the Security section.

Ideal Candidate

Applicants who are passionate and have experience in delivering a high level of customer service should apply. You will need to be honest and objective in your outlook with an ability to provide a highly professional service to a diverse community of students and staff, using good communication and interpersonal skills. Given the diverse nature of our customers we welcome applications from candidates from a diverse background.

Good observational skills and assessment skills are needed along with problem solving and taking responsibility for decision making in situations. You will be computer literate, familiar with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook and also be confident in report writing and using a Case Management System.

Whilst all round security skills are beneficial, training will be given for specific areas of the role. A current full driving license for Category B vehicles is highly desirable though not essential. You will be expected to undertake an enhanced DBS check.
